Vessel strikes are one of the leading causes of whale injury and deaths. Speed zones in the ocean are designed to help lower the risk of collisions between boats and marine life, making waters safer for wildlife and for human use.

However, speed zones may not be located where they are needed. Both wildlife and boaters can face life-threatening risks as species travel for food, breeding, and migration.

Our Solution

Reducing vessel strikes on wildlife, such as whales, starts with comprehensive data on speed zone locations. When this data is combined with information about marine life migration patterns, speed zone protections can be more effectively placed in the right areas to create safe corridors for everyone.

The Navigator platform is the most comprehensive map of marine life regulations, with each area individually coded for a variety of human activities, including speed, to assist ocean conservation efforts.

On the Navigator map, a speed zone overlay is available for easy identification of speed zones by clicking the layers button next to the countries tab, then selecting “Speed Zones.”


Navigator speed zone overlays can better inform decision makers about location-specific regulations, assist with policy evaluation as well as identify protection gaps that can better protect wildlife and enhance human safety.
